real life

I was job hunting online Tuesday, and came across the website of the Greater Hartford Arts Council. I was skimming to see if they had any openings, but was pleased to discover that they had an entire section devoted to "jobs in the arts" in the Hartford area. I found an opening that I was kind of qualified for, and applied online.

Not two hours later I got a call from these people wanting to know if I wanted to come in for an interview. This is an organization dedicated to promoting the arts in the city of Hartford. I was practically down on my knees begging. My eyes almost bugged out of my head when they told me it was 30k a year with full benefits. For administrative/office/web stuff! The Executive Director with whom I interviewed told me that she was impressed by my cover letter, and my resume was well stocked. The interview went well, and I think they like me. They're a bunch of free-spirited hippies who have long dreadlocks, wear patchouli and pass out anti-war petitions. This job is perfect.

So here's the catch. They need someone like, now. Their current person is leaving on Friday, and I'm stuck at this go-nowhere internship until the 25th of August. Now granted, the Noah Webster internship is a decent job and it's fun, but unfortunately, it's not permanent. I don't want to miss out on this killer opportunity for four stupid weeks of this 7 dollar an hour job.

I don't want to just give Noah Webster the finger either.

Hopefully the situation will sort itself out.

I'd say...

Give Noah Webster your two weeks, and advise them you've found a job that will help enhance other aspects of your development and resume. You've enjoyed working with them (NW), and look forward to visiting and keeping up a continued excellent relationship with them, since they've been a wonderful group to work with. It's something you've been proud to be a part of. You have realized that this new offer is something that you understand will be an incredible opportunity that you want to take advantage of.

Something nice like that.

I managed to put a good spin on my quitting a job that badly needed me, enough that the owners wrote me reccomendations. ;) go for it, Sarah.

good luck. I'd go with the above advice, as it seems solid. Make sure you do what makes you happy without burning too many bridges. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Whoa! You should try and find a way to take this. Not only does it seem to fit you, this has a lot of potential to lead to other things that you want to do. talk to Webster house, maybe? if you're at all comfy with your boss, they just might understand?

I agree with Darcey. An alternate idea might be to ask them if you can work part time on the website stuff until you are done with your current internship.

This looks like a sweet deal. Take it!

I agree with the above. There are definetly ways to quit without seeming like you're being ungrateful for the experience, or dislike being there. It's someting I have had trouble with in the past (but I don't think Chuck's and Margaritas was quite as nice as your current job lol)
Btw - you ready to go get some Indian food? I know I am. I gotta see if Derek's gonna be around, he wasn't sure last time I talked to him :)
See you soon!
